Introduction to the Second Class in the Series
Par72 Yoga presents the second class in their eight-part Yoga for Golfers series, led by founder and yoga instructor Megan Mckenzie. With a background in both yoga and golf, Megan brings a unique approach that blends mindful movement with performance-based physicality, making yoga more accessible and beneficial for golfers at every level. Par72 Yoga offers specialized yoga classes, workshops, and retreats designed to improve body awareness, flexibility, and focus on and off the fairway. Class Focus: Upper Body Mobility and Strength
In this session, the focus is on the upper body, with the goal of improving thoracic rotation and opening the chest, two key areas for enhancing a golfer’s swing and posture. Megan guides students through a carefully sequenced practice using blocks, props, and breath awareness to target the shoulders, neck, chest, and back.
“For today, you’re just going to need two blocks, so why don’t we go ahead and get started? Give their shoulders a little roll, a little shake. Thank you. And let’s start with the left hand today. So raise your left arm just to shoulder height. Then turn and open to the left. Turn, turn, turn, turn. And come back to center. Okay, and then switch sides. Yeah. Okay, so we’re going to start with supported Sphinx. Today’s focus is going to be chest opening.”
Highlights of the Class
- Supported Sphinx pose using yoga blocks to safely open the chest
- Thread-the-Needle flow for upper back and shoulder release
- Puppy Pose and modified Downward Dog variations to decompress the spine
- Targeted neck stretches to relieve tension in the traps and shoulders
- Standing arm circles and side body stretches for mobility
- Crescent lunge and Warrior II variations designed to promote strength and rotation
- Dolphin pose and yoga push-ups to build upper body stability
- Wrist stretches and mindful transitions to support joint health
- Banana-asana and Alligator pose for fascial release along the side body and chest
Closing Practice and Self-Assessment
The class ends with a calming Savasana and a gentle reminder to check in with the body’s rotational ability, helping practitioners assess whether upper body or hip work needs more attention.
